Answering Your Top Removals Questions

With so much to have to think about when moving to a new house, finding a removals company may not be the top of the list. So, let us give you a few tips on picking the right one, and all other removal considerations to hopefully help take the stress out of one part of your move…

1. How much will using a removals company cost?

There are many factors that make up the cost of a removal, so a quote is usually given after the move requirements have been reviewed. As a guide, the price is usually based on the following elements:

  • How much you have to move
  • Ease/Difficulty of access at both properties
  • Distance of the move

Additional services that may be offered, such as packing and dismantling/reassembling furniture.

Whatever the cost is, you will get great value from money from our experienced and friendly team.

2. How much notice should you give to a removals company?

We appreciate that this may be a tricky one as you may have to wait before getting a final move date. As soon as you know you will be moving is a good time to start getting quotes. Your move day should be your completion date – you should be given a date for this once you’re about to exchange contracts, giving you enough time to get some removal quotes. Even if you’re moving at short notice, don’t stress, as we can sometimes allow for last-minute moves and be quite flexible.

3. How can I tell if a removal company is trustworthy?

Always look for companies that are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR). Also check out legitimate customer feedback which you can find on our social media pages and our website. Reputable companies should have a great local reputation or are recommended by friends or family.

4. Who packs, them or me?

If you want to pack your own items, that’s fine, if you want Express Removals to pack for you, that’s also fine! It’s worth considering the following though to help you decide if you need a removal business to help you pack –

  • How much you have to move
  • How much time you have
  • Do you have any awkward, delicate or fragile items that you could do with some help with?
  • What about the items in your loft – is the loft boarded? For health and safety reasons, most removal companies will only empty a loft if it is boarded, well-lit and can be safely accessed by a ladder.

You can usually request a bespoke quote, asking for just certain items to be packed by us. And as per the last point, if you’re loft isn’t boarded out you will need to empty this area yourself. The same goes for unpacking – you can either do it all yourself, or for an extra charge you can ask our experienced movers for help in unpacking (check the loft is boarded!).

5. I live on a street with double yellow lines, where can the removals van park?

You may need to contact your local council to get the necessary permits or dispensations to allow us to park on yellow lines. Most removal companies like us will be familiar with this type of issue and should provide the support you need with this, we do.

6. I need to store some of my items when I move – how does this work?

Express Removals offer our own storage facility for you and can be factored in with your quotation, just let us know what you need storing when our assessor meets with you to discuss your move.

7. What happens on moving day?

First things first, make sure you’ve got your essentials before moving day (tea, milk, sugar etc) and you’ve made all essential plans for any children or pets for the day.

On move day, you will need to be at the property to welcome the removal crew at the time arranged. There will be a walk around the house to go over any instructions you might need to give about things like the fragile or awkward items to watch out for, or any other items that are not to be moved by the removal company.

Once all your items are packed onto the lorry, you will need to do a final walk around the property to check that everything has been removed as you requested. Once you get to your new property and the van has been unloaded, you’ll be asked to sign some paperwork to confirm that the move has been carried out to your satisfaction.

Then it’s time to enjoy your new home!
